Amber Cove vs Taino Bay: Puerto Plata Cruise Port Guide

Puerto Plata is one of the few Caribbean destinations with two modern cruise ports. Whether your ship docks at Amber Cove or Taino Bay, here’s everything you need to know.

Amber Cove

Opened: 2015 Operator: Carnival Corporation Cruise Lines: Carnival, Holland America, Princess, P&O

Amber Cove is a purpose-built cruise port located in Maimon Bay, about 10 minutes west of Puerto Plata city. The port features:

  • Large swimming pool with swim-up bar
  • Zip line across the bay
  • Shopping village with local crafts
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Lounge chairs and beach area

Tip: The port amenities are included in your cruise fare, so you can enjoy the pool and facilities for free if you don’t book an excursion.

Taino Bay

Opened: 2021 Operator: ITM Group Cruise Lines: Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Celebrity, others

Taino Bay is the newer port, located right in the heart of Puerto Plata city. This is a major advantage — you can literally walk from your ship into town. Features include:

  • Direct access to the city Malecón (boardwalk)
  • Walking distance to Fortaleza San Felipe
  • Local restaurants and shops nearby
  • Modern terminal facilities

Tip: If you’re at Taino Bay, you can easily explore the city on foot before or after your excursion.

Which Port Is Better?

Neither port is objectively “better” — it depends on what you’re looking for:

  • Amber Cove is better if you want resort-style amenities at the port
  • Taino Bay is better if you want to explore Puerto Plata city on foot

For excursions, both ports offer equal access to all tours and activities in the region. Our guides pick up from both locations.

Planning Your Port Day

Regardless of your port, here are our recommendations:

  1. Check your ship’s schedule — Know your all-aboard time
  2. Book excursions early — Popular tours sell out
  3. Bring US dollars — Widely accepted for tips and purchases
  4. Wear sunscreen — The Caribbean sun is strong
  5. Stay hydrated — Especially for adventure tours
